What is the cost of servicing a car in Singapore?

Car ownership is not cheap in Singapore. Here’s how much it costs to maintain a car.

The cost of owning a car in Singapore is high

Owning a car in Singapore is incredibly expensive and can easily cross the S$100,000 mark.

Not only is the upfront cost high, significant recurring costs can come from paying road taxes, insurance and petrol amongst others.

Regular servicing helps to reduce other costs of owning a car

Maintaining your car in tip-top condition becomes very important as it helps reduce some of these recurring costs.

For example, regularly servicing your car actually maintains your fuel efficiency and petrol is a very large component of recurring car costs.

If you are thinking of selling your car, regular servicing will also help retain your car’s resale value.

What is the cost of servicing your car?

After analyzing prices and quotes from close to 100 workshops on our platform, we find that the annual cost of regular servicing is around $500 while the cost of ad-hoc servicing or repairs is an additional $300.

Regularly servicing your car involves replacing parts that naturally wear down from wear and tear, such as brake pads, engine oil, filters and tyres, just to name a few.

This does not include ad-hoc repairs or maintenance. On average, car owners could end up spending an additional $300 each year to fix failing car batteries, scratches, punctured tyres, etc.

This brings the total cost to a hefty $800 per year.

However, whether or not the additional $300 is spent is heavily dependent on how disciplined a car owner is in servicing the car, as well as whether or not the car gets into accidents that require repair.

Authorized workshops vs. independent workshops

Costs of servicing at authorized workshops tends to be higher but that also comes with better services (comfortable waiting spaces, coffee service, etc.).

Our analysis suggests that servicing at authorized dealers can cost somewhere between 2-3 times the price at an independent workshop.
